Any individual who wishes to establish themselves as a professional model must first understand the various types of modeling. Professional modeling can generally be broken up into four main categories. Fashion models specialize either as photographic or runway models. The former group works in studios or on location with professional photographers to promote clothing and other products, while the latter performs the same role before a live audience on a catwalk, often at a fashion show. The two groups are closely related, though a studio model’s figure and bone structure lend themselves to photographs while runway models need to be able to walk, turn, and sometimes dance while modeling their products.

Commercial modeling should not be confused with photographic or runway modeling, though both groups work to promote a certain product. Commercial models, however, must be able to demonstrate a wide range of emotions in front of a camera. Commercial models might also need to evoke a certain demographic, such as a model capable of advertising products to senior citizens. Glamour modeling is also closely related to photographic modeling glamour models are required to strike highly specific poses that draw a person’s attention to the model more so than the product being promoted. Glamour models may appear in calendars or pinups.

Lastly, a model might choose to make a career as a promotional model. While promotional models may be photographed, they are essentially all-purpose employees whose duties can range from making live appearances at sporting events to handing out promotional material at a public function. Despite being viewed as an introductory position to the modeling world, promotional modeling is a thriving business that can be quite lucrative for dedicated workers.
